Author, speaker, blogger – Chad Gibbs
This post marks another installment of my “7 Questions With an Author…” series, where I ask published authors an unchanging set of questions and share their responses here.
Today’s author is a blogging buddy of mine named Chad Gibbs who has written two books that blend humor, faith and sports. That might sound like an odd blend but trust me when I say Chad makes it all work in gut-busting fashion.
In fact, national media outlets frequently contact him for comment regarding those topics. He’s been featured on CNN, The Washington Post, The Tampa Tribune as well as ESPN. Here’s a video snippet of a segment where he was interviewed on ESPN.
Chad’s newest book launched earlier this week and it’s titled ‘Love Thy Rival’, a tongue-in-cheek look at hate as seen through the eyes of the most intense rivalries in all of sports.
Here are 7 Questions With an Author – Chad Gibbs:
1. Tell us about your book?
Love Thy Rival recounts my trips to some of the most heated rivalry games, and asks what these rivalries can teach us about loving our enemies. That last sentence sounded kind of serious, but the book has jokes too.
2. What led you to write it?
I thought it was a natural follow up to my first book, God & Football. In that first book I looked at why we love our teams so much, and now I’m examining why many of us hate our rivals even more. I also got to take a lot of cool trips that I can write off on my taxes.
3. Who is a writer that inspires you and why?
I love writers that go and do things then write about it, like Bill Bryson hiking the Appalachian Trail or traveling around Europe. On the faith side, I’m inspired by anyone who can write about their beliefs in a humorous and self-deprecating way. Donald Miller comes to mind as a guy who can step on your toes while making your laugh.
4. What was the biggest challenge you faced writing this book?
Spelling. The book has like 60,000 words, and I had to spell them all correctly. I think the winner of this year’s Scripps’ Bee only had to spell 13 words.
5. What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?
Write a lot, read a lot, and marry a physician.
6. Where do you get your ideas?
Step one: I try to think of something I’d like to do, like go to all 12 SEC stadiums or watch the greatest rivalry games in sports. Step two: I convince myself that if I do that and write a book about it people will want to read it. Step three: I try to convince my wife the answer to step two is yes.
7. Anything that you’d like readers to know that I haven’t asked?
