My Opinion – - -
Modern day Republicanism is either the greatest thing that has come down the road in ages or it is the greatest threat to American Democracy since the foundation of the nation. (Can’t be both!)
If you are eating your three-egg omelette with ham and cheese at the little place with the free wi fi and you are surrounded by your rich fat friends, you might be thinking, “It is great to be a conservative in this great nation of ours – - – now what can we do today to put a stick up the rear ends of some Liberals?”
If you are a committed Democrat (Not a Democrat in name only – - – DINO) you might be thinking to yourself this morning – - – as you linger over your bowl of sugar-frosted oat flakes in the living room of your double-wide mobile home near a city that has been devastated and turned into a ghost town by Republican economic policies, ” Gotta hurry up and get to my fast food job so I can get it done and go on downtown to my second job. I have to get enough money together this month to buy my three kids some new shoes for school. They haven’t had any in a couple of years now.”
It never occurs to you to imagine why life has become so tough after eight long years of a conservative administration (2000-2004) followed by four years of one that has been able to do little more than struggle with the damaging challenges left to us all by the one before it.
You realize that President Obama and your fellow Democrats have been able to do some positive things in spite of Republican obstructionism in congress and you give thanks for that progress because you know that at least those whom you trusted and whom you elected in 2008 have your back and are getting some stability back into the economic mess.
And you realize that as long as Democrats are running things, there is at least a chance for someone like yourself to get a leg up somewhere down the line and to actually end up making it through all the deprivation and disappointments.
You find yourself amazed at why more of the stubborn-headed Righties don’t realize how bad things can get under a Conservative regime but then you remember how brainwashed a lot of them have become under their own little mythology – - – their own peculiar and particular set of “facts” fed to them all day every day by the right wing myth-manufacturing media machine they have created for themselves.
You think to yourself, “A lot of those people wouldn’t recognize a fact if it bit them square in the rear end – - – they are just under informed or not informed at all and they tend to go through life on their anal instincts – - – and it is not necessarily their fault.
It dawns on you that your big sin (In the eyes of the far right – - – the extreme right) is that you are a Democrat and a Liberal Progressive and that you have already been judged and found guilty of being part of some vaguely-defined 47% who want to live a life of ease at the expense of the fat cats and that you are judged by
“Them” to be unworthy and you are going to “Pay” by seeing everything you ever hoped, dreamed and worked for taken apart, turned into cash and given to those at the top of the food chain – - – that fabled 1% that you hear so much about.
Then, you push back from the table, put your cereal bowl in the sink, speak to your pet birds on the way out the door to cast you vote and there is one over riding thought in your mind – - -
“We must somehow make sure that the darned far right wing extreme never rules America again – - – I am voting for Obama and the Democrats!”
With me, it is not a choice! With me a vote for Democrats is a life and death necessity!
