Most people like spending their summers outdoors as much as they can. Who can blame them? There is so much to do, from BBQs to swimming. It’s so much fun in the sun! But those pesky mosquitoes and flies sure can ruin your fun! But fear not! Grow these flowers in your garden for a mosquito-free good time!
Marigold
Marigolds, especially the more fragrant varieties can repel Japanese beetles, white flies, and mosquitoes. These brightly coloured flowers contain a distinctive odor that insects find offensive. Potted marigolds can be placed on your porch, deck, windowsills and other entrances where mosquitoes might enter. Moreover, marigolds can also deter insects that prey on tomato plants such as aphids, cutworms and flea beetles. So it’s a good idea to plant marigolds close to your tomato plants.

Geranium
These perennials are commonly found in most home gardens, as they are low maintenance and easy to grow. They are hardy and need very little water. There are over 200 varieties of geraniums to choose from, but here is a special variety called citronella geranium or mosquito plant that can repel mosquitos. This plant contains citronella oil, an effective natural insect repellent. The oil is released when the leaves are rubbed together or crushed.
Horsemint
Also known as Beebalm, this perennial also repels mosquitoes by emitting a strong incense-like odor. This is a low maintenance plant that doesn’t require any special care. It is fast growing and drought resistant. It does well in dry sandy conditions. Besides planting these around your home, you could also crush a bloom and rub it on your clothes or exposed skin. It is an easy and naturally effective alternative to DEET and other commercially produced insect repellents.

Ageratum
Also known as floss flowers, these fuzzy blue flowers contain coumarin, a special compound that emits an offensive odor that mosquitoes detest. Although coumarin is commonly found in commercial insect repellents, do not apply or rub the flowers directly onto your skin. The natural state can irritate your skin. Instead, plant these flowers in your garden to help deter those mosquitoes.
