Women Speak More Goodly Than Guys

The headline of this blog post shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone, in fact the best communicators I’ve known in my professional and personal live have all been the fairer sex – just ask my wife. In fact, the past 14 or so years that I’ve been in corporate communications all of my bosses have been women – and they’ve typically been some of  the best communicators within the various organizations. That fact comes to bear in two studies ...

Why I Run Full and Half Marathons…

Tomorrow morning, I’ll wake up at about 5am to make it on time to the Frederick Running Festival where I plan to run a half marathon – which is 13.1 miles. When I started this blog, nearly a year ago to the day, my very first post was about the completion of my third full marathon. Since then, I’ve completed two more full and several halves. Often times, friends and family say they understand my desire to run a few miles – but they completely don’t get ...

Our Pregnancy Update – Week 34

The Wife at 33 Weeks The arrival of our new baby boy is a mere six weeks away or 42 days or approximately 1,008 hours – regardless the clock keeps ticking, while he keeps kicking. He keeps growing as well, which is a good thing but has been very tiring on my wife who is pictured here for the first time on this blog as a soon-to-be mom! Isn’t she adorable? [Note: all heads must be nodding - I learned the marriage mantra ...

Love in The Looming Shadows

There’s a bit of enchantment in the air. It could be coming from the trees, dressed in scorching colors, tossing acorns and apples — shamelessly showing off, or from the cobalt sky as it poses behind the flashy trees, my two pretty sisters, vying for attention. Or perhaps the universe is feeling generous; directing the angels to make haste — sprinkle the magic! I imagine it’s all of the above, plus a little more: I believe I’ve finally embraced the reality ...

Our Pregnancy Update – Week 27

The arrival of our new baby boy is less than 13 weeks away and we’re thrilled as the due day of June 19th draws closer. Junior has been so active of late that his intra-uteral gymnastics have woken my wife up in the middle of the night. We expect to see full-fledged “Alien” abdominal movements within the next week – how cool is that! We’ve cleared our the guest room and have set up the crib – it’s one of those heavy, oak ...

5 Productivity Pitfalls Learned From Marathon Training

Ron was kind enough to publish a piece I wrote titled 5 Productivity Pitfalls Learned From Marathon Training - here's an excerpt: ======================================== Prior to my 40th birthday I decided I wanted to run a full marathon. I found a training regimen, stuck to it and successfully completed my first 26.2 mile distance within the ...

Fairness is Overrated…

For the past few decades, the big trend in corporate America has been “pay for performance.” In other words, the more you do on the job or the better your results for the organization – the greater your compensation. The underlying idea of this trend has been a fundamental component of capitalism since its inception. For example, the more a sales representative sells, the higher their bonus. When a professional athlete performs exceptionally on the field, court, track or ice, their pre-negotiated ...

Who the Hell is Calling?

So, it’s 4:30am and I’m typing away my thoughts to you. I actually woke up at four and tossed and turned for a bit; my mind was restless, writing random lines and veering off the straight and narrow. I pulled it back on course, a huge ship, with much too much uncharted sea, and then my phone rang. Little dog, who was sleeping within the folds of blanketed comfort next to me, barked out a lame warning, sort of a burpy ...

Inspiration: What We See In Trees…

Grant me the ability to be alone,
May it be my custom to go outdoors each day
among the trees and grasses
among all growing things
and there may I be alone,
and enter into prayer
to talk with the one
that I belong to.
Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav

Every time I take a nature walk, I look around and see so many beautiful trees looking back at me. They stand there in all their majesty, beckoning me to come closer, to pay attention to their silent dignity and to honor their resiliency. I see so many that I felt this post should be a sort of homage to the trees that welcome me on my walks around the neighborhood.

“One is wise to cultivate the tree that bears fruit in our soul.” Henry David Thoreau

Inspiration: What We See In Trees…

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.” William Blake

I seem to have a rapport with a particular tree. Every time I walk by it, the sun shines on it in an unusual way… But today when I went to capture it, the sun disappeared and all that was left was the tree, me… and the beauty of nature around the beautiful tree…I will go back another day, at sunset and see if the tree will let me capture and share what ethereal beauty it has shown me… Do we all see something in trees? Come back for more below.

“Except during the nine months before he draws his first breath no man manages his affairs as well as a tree does.” George Bernard Shaw

Inspiration: What We See In Trees…

“Never cut a tree down in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come.” Robert H. Schuller

Sometimes, what I see are shrubs, standing bold and tall, keening to be trees. And then there are decorated trees; city trees made to whore their wares during the holidays or perhaps decorated to please us … as if nature’s natural jewels aren’t enough. They are pretty too but I wonder how they feel. What would they say if they could speak?  “Look at me, all blinged and tricked out… See how gloriously I shine. These lights are hot, and any day soon, my number will be up. Do you still love me?” Yes, we do. Do we ever feel the call of nature? Do we ever stop to see the beauty around us?  If we paused for a moment, and looked around us, we might hear the call and see what secret beckons us in the trees.

What are your thoughts? What do you see in trees? Do you every feel the call of nature? Do you make time to see the beauty around you? What do you see?

Do share! Thank you.
