Listening To Nature

A cool air mass invaded the East Coast yesterday and blew summer out the back door.

Today we are in a new world. It’s cooler, dryer and there are Sunday football games on the tube. Can the seasons change in a matter of a few hours?

Yes! They can!

Nature explodes with an energy that belittles the largest bomb our government can make! Nature is wild, strong and, sometimes, gentle. The good news is that we are connected with it. It listens to us and we listen to it. Bombs don’t listen. They are small (in comparison) and they destroy. Nature, of course, can destroy as well. A tornado can rip apart your town.

But it will take care of you at the same time. It will assimilate your bones. And, down the road, it will provide you with another womb, if you feel like returning here. It will cradle your soul.

Eventually we will be prompted to leave here. One way or another. It may be a gentle tug from somewhere as we sleep at night. Or, it may be a violent episode brought on by war or some other form of brutal destruction. But we will go. Will the process be personal or impersonal? I prefer to listen, think and understand.

Nature is here to make this process work for billions of people, animals and other living things. It integrates the many into a unified whole. And, it adds beauty along the way.

We should work with nature more than we do. It will certainly work with us. And we should listen to it too.
