This week marks our family’s 23rd week of pregnancy with our third child – Junior Constantino. We’re consciously making it a family event to ensure our two daughters are fully engaged in the entire experience.
A few weeks back we found out the gender of our newest addition to the family – and the girls continue to be thrilled!
My wife went in for an unltra-sound this morning and everything seems fine, normal with no complications – God is good. When we first found out that we were pregnant we signed up for weekly updates from a fantastic web site, BabyCenter.com – here’s the latest:
Turn on the radio and sway to the music. With his sense of movement well developed by now, your baby can feel you dance. And now that he’s more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound, you may be able to see him squirm underneath your clothes.
Blood vessels in his lungs are developing to prepare for breathing, and the sounds that your baby’s increasingly keen ears pick up are preparing him for entry into the outside world. Loud noises that become familiar now — such as your dog barking or the roar of the vacuum cleaner — probably won’t faze her when she hears them outside the womb.
His lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and he’s even developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums. His eyes have formed, but his irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment.
If you could see inside your womb, you’d be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers his body and the deep wrinkles on his skin, which he’ll sport until he adds a padding of fat to fill them in. Inside his belly, his pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.
For those keeping track at home, here’s the baby’s growth trajectory on the trusted veggie/fruity scale:
Week 23 – Mango
Week 22 – Spaghetti Squash
Week 21 – Carrot
Week 20 – Banana
(NOTE: At this stage the measurements change from “head-to-rump” to another standard of “head-to-toe”)
Week 19 – Heirloom Tomato
Week 18 – Bell Pepper
Week 17 – Turnip
Week 16 – Avocado
Week 15 – Apple
Week 14 – Lemon
Week 13 – Medium Shrimp
Week 12 – Lime
Week 11 – Fig
Week 10 – Kumqut
Week 9 – Grape
One of the things my wife and I have been discussing that’s new since our last child was born nearly eight years ago is the top of umbilical cord blood banking. The idea is that during the baby’s deliver, some of the blood and tissue from the cord is preserved for any applicable health needs the baby might have in the future. This was not an available option for either of our girls.
Question: Have you banked blood or tissue from one of your child’s births? If you had a child today would or wouldn’t you do it?
