The next time you’re walking down the street and you happen upon a noisy group of people dressed to the Nines in what looks like Paul Revere clothes, carrying musket rifles and waving signs around with uncomplimentary pictures of government officials on them or words to the effect, “We came unarmed this time” or any number of other hateful and provocative things, you have probably encountered something known as a “Patriot” movement group of one kind or another.
I suggest that once you get through laughing your rear end off at how ridiculous some of these clowns can look in their overly-tight trousers and powdered wigs, you can hang around and listen to their vitriolic speech condemning the American way of government or you can simply walk on.
If you stop to talk, you are liable to get an ear full of how wonderful it is to be a “Soveriegn Citizen” or something.
Sovereiegn Citizens are, of course, reportedly often nut whacks who believe they are somehows exempt from all State and Federal Laws, that United States Money is a fraudulent scheme and that all forms of taxation are illegitimate.
In a word, I believe that some of these deluded individuals actually think they can be American Citizens without any American Responsibilities. I think sometimes that some of these whack jobs believe they are a law unto themselves and that they are given legitimacy by some kind of Divine Power and – - – most decidedly that The Government is totally corrupt.
One note that I found interesting when I was researching this article is one that says that these “Patriot” movements and their close cousins, The Private Militia Movements, all tend to be – - -Some form of Conservative. I read that in the first line of the article on these “Patriot” movements in Wikipedia to which I have linked later on down the line here for your future study if you are so inclined.
It gets worse!
On further investigation, it might soon also be discovered that at least some of this group might be what I call “Apocolyptists.”
This means that some of them are convinced that there is a natural enmity between the U.S. Government (The Evil Forces) and The Citizens (The Good Forces) and that this tension between the two is somehow contained within the framework of what they view as “Authentic” Biblical Teaching and that some kind of titanic and final struggle between the Citizens (The Good Guys) and the Government (The Bad Guys) is inevitable.
The danger as I see it is that some of the whacks seem to think that this Apocolyptic struggle will be an armed conflict that resembles the first American Revolution.
I think it is all based on some kind of runaway paranoia and I think this viewpoint is one of the reasons that a lot of Conservatives and Right Wingers are so frantic to protect their Second Amendment Rights from what they see as a government threat to revoke those rights and I think it is one of the reasons for the currently rampant gun craze in the United States.
Did I mention that some of this kind of whacked out nut-ism is viewed by the U.S. Government as a potential kind of Domestic Right Wing Terrorism?
I hope I never live to see the day when some of these folks might go off and start shooting in a public place with some of their automatic military-style assault weapons with the hundred round clips that they can access so easily now because of all the changes in the gun laws in some of the more lenient states lately.
