Stephen - The Chubby Chatterbox

Peculiar Picture #11

As many of you know, I’m a retired illustrator. I have a Peculiar Picture Portfolio of images that, for one reason or another, have never seen the light of day. This illustration sprang forth from a doodle I was toying with a few years back.

Unlike most of my work, this picture never found a home in a book or magazine. I think it says something about relationships, but I’m not certain what. These two people appear to have quite different agendas.

What do you think is going on?

    Stephen - The Chubby Chatterbox

Visit Stephen Hayes’ blog Chubby Chatterbox for excerpts from Hayes’ memoir The Kid in the Kaleidoscope, a collection of observations about growing up in the Fifties, Sixties and beyond. The Chubby Chatterbox is an unabashedly sentimental journey seen through the eyes of an artist, traveler and world-class screw-up.

    • Obvious. The tree is an ear. The man is attempting to amputate it. Which I think means that many men don’t want to listen. And I don’t mean to their wives, although we know they don’t do that very well either. I mean to their Intuition. Men like to keep things real light many times, which to me, gets really boring after too long.

The woman is nurturing or watering her gift of Intuition, which lots of times gives her information that scares him. So, he calls her crazy, etc., and goes about trying his best to cut his, and her, intuition off.

I think many men utilize women’s Intuition, use her, for the insight they can’t seem to humble themselves to receive. As long at its not directed at them, they think it’s a fine tool to have in ‘their tool chest.’
