Hosting My First Challenge At I.A.

As I've mentioned previously, I'm a new member of Inspiration Avenue, a small but international conglomerate of artists who support one another's work. I love this group of women, Maggie, Lisa W, Hettienne, Shelly, Dianne, Kim & Lisa D , they're all creative and endlessly friendly. I'm enjoying being a member even more than I thought possible, having other artists to talk to has really helped focus my artistic journey. This week is my first I.A. challenge and I decided the theme would be "You've ...

Book GiveAway: Complete Jon Acuff Library Each Day

If you've read this blog for the past few months, you've witnessed my metamorphosis into a full-fledged fan of best-selling author, blogger and speaker Jon Acuff. During the past three years, Acuff has published the following three books: his first was Stuff Christians Like; followed by Gazelles, Baby Steps and 37 Other Things Dave Ramsey Taught Me About Debt; with his most recent Wall Street Journal best-seller titled Quitter. I've read each of these titles within the past two months, and I ...

Nosh Some Hamentashen

Hamentashen, whose sweet fillings peak through the center of the delicious pastry, have become the symbol of the holiday of Purim. Just like any Hanukkah celebration requires latkes, the Purim celebration needs Hamentashen. You can always purchase them in virtually any supermarket, but why not try making them at home. Here is my Hamentashen recipe that I've been using forever. I use the dough recipe that my Grandmother made. Now, she never wrote a recipe down. It was always, "a pinch ...

Perseverance: Seeing Each Blog Post Through the Challenge…

“If you wish success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother and hope your guardian genius.” Joseph Addison Perseverance: Fly faithfully and diligently... Success is near The daily challenge of posting on our blogs calls for periodic motivational refreshment. I think the poem below will help nudge us along the path. So far, we have conquered 24 days and have many more to go. Don’t despair, just hang in there… and if the going gets muddy, ...

Sushi Wednesday: Mikado

I had my first sushi rolls and my friend got what I had last week. One roll was called the "exotic roll" and I forget the name of the other one. One was mild and sweet and the other one was sweet and spicy, but not too spicy. I can't stand when people drown the taste of food in hot sauce or spicy condiments/veggies. This roll had just the right amount of kick. For dessert I got the triple chocolate mouse ...

How to Create Moss Graffiti

What is moss graffiti? In recent years, moss graffiti has been quite popular, appearing on walls around the world. Moss Graffiti is an environmentally-friendly alternative to creating graffiti on walls. Instead of using the toxic spray paints that are bad for the air, “moss paint” is used as the medium. Not only is it better for the environment, the best part is that the moss will continue to grow over time. Essentially, a moss graffiti artist would be creating living works ...

Underpainting

Underpainting – how it impacts your work Underpainting has been the focus of my work for the last few weeks. I’m experimenting with some new things, beginning with the underpainting of the landscapes you see below. The first is a rework of a previously painted picture of Mt Taranaki on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Mt Taranaki II This work has a burnt Sienna acrylic ground painted and dried underneath the worked up image that you see here. Next Thursday, I ...

Thoughts on a visit home

You can’t go home again. I know the expression, but not the writer nor the book that prompted its use in the mainstream. I go home infrequently these days since I live nearly three thousand miles away. Still, I find myself returning to my childhood home often enough that I don’t feel like a stranger. On a typical visit, I try to squeeze too much in, seeing friends and family and soaking in the memories that inundate my mind, powerful and inevitable. They are mostly ...

Pampered Pets

We recently designed and installed beautiful custom bedding for a client that wanted to pamper her pooches as much as herself – the lucky dogs! The bedding was crafted from sumptuous velvet and we designed washable bedding for her dogs to match. Needless to say, someone was very happy! Of course, incorporating a pet’s needs into a home is not unusual. In fact, it’s not only common, it’s smart! Considering your pet’s needs when designing your home maximizes space, style and ...

13 Fascinating Uses for Hibiscus

The hibiscus is a tropical plant beloved for its bold and beautiful, trumpet-shaped flowers that come in white, pink, red, orange and yellow. The beauty of the flowers make hibiscus a popular garden plant, but it is so much more than just an ornamental flower. All parts of the plant (the flowers, leaves, seeds, bark) are useful! Hibiscus has been cultivated in many parts of the world for medicinal and culinary purposes. It is a plant with many wonders! For one, ...

They’re destroying the planet before going on vacation

I hear crashes and yelling coming from the basement. I walk quietly down the stairs to investigate. The playroom is out of control. Legos and puzzle pieces and soccer balls and feathers (feathers?!) are everywhere. Hi Mom. We’re destroying the planet. I can’t get into this right now, so I nod ok and head back upstairs. Bits and pieces of their dialog float upstairs. No more pizza! Toss it off the pirate ship! One more minute! They are boys, and they are ours. This week we’ve experienced crankiness, heat, vomit, ...

What is Flowering Tea?

Most of you will agree that watching tea steep is like watching paint dry. It’s not fun and it’s not something people do. But if you ever have the opportunity to try China’s infamous flowering tea, you might just want to pull up a chair. Flowering Tea, also known as blooming tea, are bundles of tea leaves and flowers that slowly blossom right before your eyes when steeped in hot water. These tea bundles are sewn by hand in China by talented ...

Pretend not

From 10/ 31  The good prevails

So now that you vote for the smart alternatitive guaranteed to make bad disappear and to make enlightened democracy the order of the day …. We all feel better and know that we had the choice to build a better society peopled by more better thinkers and saps.

The fire and ice will be done and the descent into the dregs of human endeavor will continue.

Heroes will not emerge.

Guts will not show themselves.

Character and deliberation will continue to be frowned upon.

False issues built on false premise will continue to suck up all available air.

Ignorant dolts will seize upon discord and unease as they have always done to wrather the rabble and look for good avenues of hate and prime paths to power and the whip hand.

Civilization and its discontents will be left to hand wringers and yelpers with no fight and the world will be made safe for more and more stools and tools and fools.

The forearm shiv and the steel booted stomp will always rule the day.

Pretend not.
