Our faces tell a thousand stories and everywhere we go, they project their message about how we feel and what we are experiencing; joy, sadness, confusion, anger, happiness and many other emotions. Sometimes we wear masks; symbolic or real, to project a completely different message from what we feel, and sometimes our mask reveal who we truly are… Physiognomy is a form of face reading that gives the reader lots of information about us and helps them to predict a variety of things. Our faces are a stamp on the world; we can welcome others with a smile or a grimace…

Our faces and the many faces we see daily help us recognize the multitude features that identify who we are and where we come from. Our faces carry certain identifying markers that show our group orientation, our ethnicity, our family connections, our age, our gender, and more. So when we meet a face, we begin the process of retrieving identifiers from our memory bank or selecting markers to help us remember who/what we just saw… This is a way we distinguish human faces from non-human faces and everything in between.

I shared a story once about a woman I saw on the NYC subway whose face was etched with years of rage/anger that she must have carried around with her. It reminded me of my mother’s admonishment, “Wipe that grimace off your face… or it will become a permanent look!” I remember being told that a smiling face blossoms and an angry face shrivels…

For this week’s photo challenge on faces, I have selected a wide range of faces that I collected over time. Some are human, some animal, a few are sculptures, and several are masks. I love masks because they speak to the traditions and cultures of people around the world. The masks I showcase are African but I’m sure you have seen others representative of other cultures. When we take a moment to look at the faces of people around us, we will begin to notice that each face carries its own biography; telling stories of the bearer and letting us know if they are open to connecting with us or not. The saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul is quite true; when you look in the eyes of other people, you immediately detect their comfort or discomfort with you… We know that a smile lights up a face and that a frown darkens it… so every emotion we express appears on our faces… adding or taking away from our beauty and perhaps our truth.

Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES… the male equivalent on the same NYC building
I know a smile makes a huge difference in our exchange with others. I take a daily walk on the Croton Aqueduct in my area. Some days, I am pensive and look inwards, focusing on my mini radio and the message or music coming from it. People pass me hurriedly, trying to not interrupt my silence or to avoid my facial message that I am currently unavailable… At other times, I smile as a stranger passes me on the aqueduct and they smile back; in that moment, a friendly hello is communicated without words… We do this again and again until one of us musters a verbal hello. A smile does make a difference… What are your thoughts? What kinds of faces did you find? Did you choose human faces or other types of faces? Do share? Thank you!
