“Affluence was, quite simply, a question of texture … The threadbare carpets of infancy, the coconut matting, the ill-laid linoleum, the utility furniture … had all spoken of a life too near the bones of subsistence, too little padded, too severely worn.” Margaret Drabble

All of life is textured and we gravitate to things; symbols, images, elements that appeal to us. Sometimes, we are drawn to soft and fuzzy things and at other times to solid and heavy things. But regardless of what we see and choose, we notice things more when we pay attention… an important lesson to learn about life in general. But it is interesting to see what we get drawn to again and again.
“The web, then, or the pattern, a web at once sensuous and logical, an elegant and pregnant texture: that is style, that is the foundation of the art of literature.” Robert Louis Stevenson

When I saw the new assignment last Friday, I was concerned that I won’t have any or enough textured things to share. Frankly, the subject didn’t interest me one bit. But, as I contemplated the idea and saw the beautiful textured things my blog buddies and others shared, I slowly started to get excited about this challenge. As I paid closer attention to the colors and textures around me, I found things that fit and they are here today.
“Symbolism is no mere idle fancy or corrupt regeneration: it is inherent in the very texture of human life” Alfred North Whitehead

By now, you know that I enjoy looking at each photo challenge from a philosophical viewpoint. I find that it helps me conceptualize the assignments and make connections between what we see and what we think. As I gathered my shots for this Photo Challenge, it made sense to me that the stories of our lives, the very fabric of our lives are filled with textured experiences and exchanges that have helped us form our personal histories; some soft, some hard, some colorful and others nuanced… and with them come lifetime reminders; shown through the interrelationship of elements around us. “In shape, it is perfectly elliptical. In texture, it is smooth and lustrous. In color, it ranges from pale alabaster to warm terra cotta. And in taste, it outstrips all the lush pomegranates that Swinburne was so fond of sinking his lyrical teeth into.” Anon

As we spend time observing our surroundings, paying attention to the textures and sounds that are around us, we begin to understand the magical nature of the world we live in. We exist in a three dimensional world that is as fascinating as it is textured. The textures add to the beauty and richness of our lives and we couldn’t function effectively without the presence of all these textures/elements around us… Enjoy them! What are your thoughts? What textured things did you find? Did you enjoy the hunt for ideal examples of textured? Do share? Thank you! ![]()

To know the power of a positive attitude is to grasp the battle and marriage between our thoughts and actions.

This is an absolutely delilghtful exercise in perspective. This kind of thing gives one a better sense of the organization of Creation and can lead to introspection that opens avenues to improving the quality of life with one’s inner resources.
