As we have been in the flower business for 30+ yrs we already knew that the gift of flowers evokes instant smiles & happiness but what about the gift giver? What does it say about them?
Rutgers researcher Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D & director of the Universities Human Emotions Lab undertook the job of trying to find out what the gifts we give says about who we are & how we are perceived by others. What she found is that compared to other gifts people who send flowers are viewed as successful, caring and emotionally intelligent.
Flower Power is not a new subject for Haviland-Jones as several years ago she completed a study that showed the recipient of a gift of flowers experiences instant delight & happiness as well as increased enjoyment and life satisfaction (no surprise to us!). Especially female’s who upon recieving a gift of flowers responded with real smiles and positive moods that often lasted for days.
The findings of this latest study have shown that through the gifts you give you can influence & change what others think of you in a significant way. This news is imperative for those who wish to enhance friendships, romances and even business relationships.
Here a few of the studies specific findings:

- Both men & women who give flowers are perceived as happy, successful, strong, capable & courageous.
- Men & women are considered as more emotionally intelligent; they give the impression that they can easily & effectively express their emotions as well as taking the time to understand the feelings of others.
- Female floral gift givers are viewed as being much more appreciative of beauty and nature.
“Flowers have evolved to activate positive emotional responses from people,” says Haviland-Jones. “Each bloom has the potential to put a smile on our face and sway our opinion of a friend, colleague or loved one. That’s powerful.”
A successful person is not necessarily someone with a lot of money and material goods, but rather someone who is in tune with people and knows how to touch their hearts, I can think of no other item besides flowers that evokes such positive feelings and perceptions for both the giver and the recipient.
